A mouthguard is a protective device that covers the teeth and gums to prevent injury during activities that might involve impact to the face. They are commonly used in sports such as football, hockey, boxing, and basketball, where there’s a risk of collision or contact with hard surfaces or other players.
Mouthguards can also be used in non-sporting contexts, such as for teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep. There are three main types of mouthguards:
- Stock Mouthguards:
These are pre-formed and ready to wear. They are the least expensive and can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. However, they often do not fit very well and can be bulky, making them uncomfortable to wear. - Boil and Bite Mouthguards:
Made from thermoplastic material, these mouthguards can be softened in hot water, then inserted into the mouth to shape around the teeth using finger and tongue pressure. They offer a better fit than stock mouthguards and are widely available at sporting goods stores. - Custom-Fitted Mouthguards:
These are made by a dentist or a dental laboratory. They are individually designed and made to fit precisely over the user’s teeth and gums. While they are more expensive, they provide the best protection and comfort.
Using a mouthguard can help prevent injuries such as broken teeth, jaw fractures, cuts to the lips and tongue, and other injuries to the mouth and face.
